New cadet headquarters gets the go-ahead

A new headquarters for air and army cadets in Exmouth has been approved by district planners.

The proposed new cadet centre, to be shared and jointly paid for by the army and Air Training Corps (ATC), will be built at the top of Phear Park, at the opposite end of the car park to the existing cadet headquarters, which would be demolished.

Members of East Devon District Council’s development management committee decided to approve the planning application for the centre at their meeting on Tuesday.

Councillor Steve Gazzard said: “The design is very good and will be hidden by the walls already there. It will be a huge improvement for the young people that use it.”

Councillor Brian Bailey, who addressed the committee as a ward member for Withycombe, said: “The ATC is a very good organisation.

“It’s character building, and very good for the community.”

Councillors also backed calls for stones from the site, thought to have originated from the previous Marpool Hall, to be retained in the park.

Exmouth Town Council’s planning committee had previously supported the application.
