THE chief officer of Age Concern Exmouth has called on local support groups to set up drop-in surgeries in their new 20,000 advice centre in Rolle Street, writes David Beasley. The new centre, converted from a former toy shop over the last 18 months, opened earlier this month, thanks to a combination of fundraising, legacies and the generous support of local trusts. Mr Dace said they wanted to create a one-stop shop for all the information needs for older people in the town.He said: "I am delighted with our new premises; it offers everything that any older person could want when it comes to information and advice."Because it's in the town centre, on the ground floor and has full wheelchair access and no stairs to negotiate, access is easier."We would like to invite support groups, like an Alzheimer's group for instance, to hold regular drop in surgeries - we have a welcoming reception area with a vast array of information leaflets available free to the public and two private rooms available, where individuals can discuss in confidence any issues they may have."He added the centre also houses the main business office for Age Concern Exmouth, while a meeting room is also available for hire. The running costs of the new centre, at 36A Rolle Street, are being supported by the generosity of local businesses that belong to a sponsorship scheme. He says he hopes the people of Exmouth will support the centre by making donations - Age Concern Exmouth receives no government funding, and is an independent local charity. There will also be various volunteer vacancies available in the near future, specifically for information and advice advocates and for volunteers to run some new activities that are planned. But despite the new premises, Mr Dace has made it clear that Landon House, in New Street, would continue with its seven-day-a-week lunch clubs and full day centre facilities, as well as the outreach lunch clubs at Littleham, Withycombe and Brixington. The centre is open 9.30am - 1pm and 1.30pm to 4pm daily, Monday to Friday. Appointments are not necessary, as the centre is open on a drop-in basis, however it would be advisable to make an appointment if you feel your enquiry will need more than just a simple yes or no answer. If you are interested in any volunteer opportunities across Age Concern Exmouth, then please contact Steve on: (01395) 271242.
