If you’ve ever wondered about the benefits of visiting a private dentist before, here are five myths things you need to know, from teeth whitening and emergency dentist appointments to dental charges and payment plans…

How much does a private dentist cost?

NHS dentistry is priced in bands, which are designed to be cost-effective for the tax-payer. When you see a private dentist you’ll get an itemised written estimate of all charges before you commit, so there will be no surprises. And a private dentist isn’t as expensive as you might think – at The Whyte House Dental Group in Exeter and Topsham, check-ups start from as little as £20 and small x-rays from £5. This is often cheaper than NHS dental charges.

NHS dentist treatments are designed to be functional, therefore, there are some cosmetic treatments you are unable to get on the NHS. Cosmetic dentistry can include treatments such as teeth whitening, teeth straightening, cosmetic fillings and veneers. This means your only option for procedures like these, is to go private.

Can I get teeth whitening on the NHS?

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments, but it is not available on the NHS. It is an excellent way to give you a beaming smile, and can be done safely without removing healthy enamel from the teeth. The Whyte House uses two teeth whitening systems, and you can discuss your options with no obligation, leaving you free to decide if it’s affordable for you.

What about if I need an emergency dentist appointment?

At a private dental clinic, you can see an emergency dentist during normal opening hours, as well as for our-of-hours emergency dentist callouts and consultations. You often will have more flexibility with emergency appointments with a private dentist than an NHS dentist, and appointments will be longer and feel less rushed.

What if I can’t afford a private dentist?

Many private dentists will offer a selection of payment options. Dental charges are normally an unwelcome surprise, but often if you register at a practice you will be offered a form of payment plan. These can include finance, as well as being able to pay by card or cheque for dental treatments.
