I was interested to see the photograph of the Woodbury Cricket Club team - circa 1960s - in Roger Stokes' column in the Journal of February 12.The 'mystery' man in the back row was David Rees. He had a distinguished war career - a major in the Royal Engineers, awarded the MC, building bridges under fire in Northern Italy. He came to live in Exmouth, designing and building a house in Cranford Avenue. He was a chartered surveyor and, when the government took over valuation for rating purposes in 1950, he was appointed valuation officer for Exeter and East Devon. When the 1956 revaluation resulted in much higher rateable values, an Exwick resident mounted a vitriolic campaign to try to get it reversed. Your esteemed and well-loved predecessor, Bill Gorfin, the editor of the Journal, joined the campaign and wrote many editorials and front page articles - some of which, I fear, were rather intemperate. I though Roger Stokes might be interested - John Bradford, my friend and ex-Exmouth Cricket Club playing member, as I was, will remember David Rees.Peter Heard,Romany Cottage, High Street, Lindfield, West Sussex.
