Otterton Mill - at Otterton, near Budleigh Salterton - has announced its summer season of music events.

Mill owners Chris and Carol Wright say they are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the unique music venue – described by The Guardian as ‘the mill that rocks – for their ‘best summer season yet’.

Proceedings kick off tonight (Thursday, July 13) with blues and R&B quartet Hucklebuck. Featuring powerful blues harmonica player Ian Briggs, double bassist Ian Jennings, guitarist Adam Sweet and drummer Richard Glazebrook, the band draw on both original and lesser known compositions in a unique harmonica-led style.

That’s followed on Thursday, July 27, by the FB Pocket Orchestra, an acclaimed trio performing hot jazz, blues, ragtime and popular dance tunes of the 1920s and 30s.

On Thursday, August 3 there’s the return of the five-piece Daniel Smith Blues Band. Focusing on boogie-woogie, hard bop, soul-jazz, blues, New Orleans and other genres, keyboardist Smith is described as ‘one of the most exciting talents to emerge onto the British blues scene in recent years’.

Ragged Union – a bluegrass band from Colorado featuring ‘some of the state’s finest pickers’– appear on Thursday, August 17. Fronted by the dynamic duo of husband and wife, Geoff and Christina Union, eclectic music magazine R2 describes them as ‘a scorching live proposition’.

And on Thursday, August 31 there’s a return visit by Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, Best Duo winners in the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. The husband and wife duo – who have collaborated with the likes of Seth Lakeman (Sean’s younger brother), Cara Dillon, The Levellers, Kate Rusby and Show of Hands – ‘deliver an intimacy and strength of passion in their music’.

All gigs take place outdoors in the Mill’s historic courtyard. There’s seasonal food between 6pm and 7.30pm, with music starting at 8pm.

Tickets for all shows are £17.50 per person (includes a glass of Mill punch). This price covers music ticket only. Tickets can be booked by calling 01395 568521 or by visiting the Mill Shop in the main Mill building.
