Honorary Secretary of the Museum, Roy Roberts, has said their management committee have called for a civic function.
Mr Roberts said: "The number of invitees would be in order of 50 to 80 persons and ideally held in the council chamber committee rooms or if it can be arranged in the Salvation Army Hall."
Town councillors will decide whether to back the request on Monday.
