MPs’ shame

PUBLISHED: 07:00 15 November 2013

How much longer are we going to tolerate the MPs and their expenses? How dare they heat and light their homes at our expense – have they no shame?

Hugo Swire is among many others whose expenses claims have outstripped the 1.9 per cent rise in average dual bills from £1,105 to £1,310. Hugo Swire asked for £3,198.61 last year – a 543 per cent rise on £497 in 2010-11.

Labour MP John Mann said these bills are for staying overnight, and has called for a cap of £1,000 on claims.

Tory MP Nadhim Zahawis claimed nearly £6,000 for his heat and electricity bills – this is taxpayers’ money.

We, like many others, cannot afford to put our heating on in the day because of our fear of the bills.

How can Hugo Swire, like others in this government, have any idea how we live – they live in another world from us.

I believe over 340 MPs get energy bills paid on expenses. This is shocking.

They don’t need paying for being an MP – it seems they can live off their expenses.
