MP still backs hub idea for Exmouth’s St John’s Court

East Devon MP Hugo Swire has reiterated support for creating a health hub at a closure-threatened Exmouth mental health facility.

St John’s Court is run by the Devon Partnership NHS Trust (DPT), which wants to sell the site and move to more affordable premises in Exmouth.

Mr Swire made his comments in a letter to a recent meeting of the project group, which is discussing the facility’s future. He said he would find it ‘unacceptable’ for Exmouth to experience a reduction in mental health services, but recognised the DPT needed to save money, and therefore backed a hub.

He said: “This proposal would prevent St John’s Court from closure, whilst ensuring the facility is used in a cost-effective way.”

Mr Swire added that he would lobby for funding if a fully-costed hub plan were produced.

Campaigner Dot Taylor told this week’s Exmouth Town Council meeting that DPT had reneged on the health hub proposal. However, a DPT spokesman said it continued to work closely with the stakeholder group, and that while its preferred option was to find a more affordable site in the town, it was still open to the St John’s Court hub idea.
