More than 1,200 tonnes of rubbish was recycled in East Devon over Christmas and New Year - this weighs the equivalent of six blue whales.

The district’s residents managed to recycle 61 per cent of their waste during the two weeks over the festive season.

This is almost 20 per cent more than what they did during the same period last year.

In total 1,212 tonnes of rubbish was recycled - this is 414 tonnes more than what they did in the same period last year under an old recycling system.

It all comes after the introduction of East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) new recycling scheme.

Councillor Tom Wright, responsible for the environment, said: “This is a phenomenal result and I have nothing but praise and gratitude for our residents for playing their part in recycling so much and protecting our environment.

“This is the most recycling that East Devon has ever collected in a two week period and thank you to our hardworking crews who collected this huge volume of recycling, often in poor weather conditions.”

Along with the recycling, East Devon shredded more than 900 Christmas trees at eight different sites across the district in the New Year. The chippings were then used in local parks and gardens.

Since last February the authority, in partnership with its contractors SUEZ, has rolled out its new recycling scheme to all of East Devon’s 68,700 properties.

EDDC has extended the range of items residents can now have collected from the kerbside every week. This includes cardboard, plastics, cartons and small electrical goods

The changes have now put East Devon among the best recycling districts in England, making EDDC one of the 30 best recycling authorities in the country.

The council’s smart phone app has been a great help to communicate the changes by sending reminders about recycling and waste collection days tailored to the addresses of residents.
