Monstrosity in the sky

'Any benefits to two-tiers'. Jan Pawson asked this question in last week's edition of the Journal. I am a firm believer in a single-tier local authority and feel that Devon as one unit is too big.Being concerned at the amount of taxpayers' money being wasted in publicising the separate positions being taken by the council leaders, I wrote to the chief executive of the county and district councils on December 19 last, asking how much was being spent on publicity and lawyers.East Devon responded promptly, admitting how much the legal appeal will cost. I have yet to receive an acknowledgement or reply from Devon County Council, which reinforces my belief that Devon is too big to care. We do not need Save Our Sara, or Brian Is Best campaigns, we need the county and district councillors to get their heads together, something they have never previously done, to propose the best solution to the Secretary of State before it is too late.The ASDA fiasco appears to have originated because of the desire of East Devon District Council to get rid of any responsibility for the swimming pool. We now have a pie in the sky, or should I say monstrosity in the sky, of a three-storey car park at a time when increasing parking costs leave extra unused capacity. Many of us can no longer afford our parking season tickets. We need to consider regeneration of small business before wasting money on such horrors.D J Bale, Capel Lane, Exmouth.
