MORE than £3,000 was raised for 12 charities by the Rotary Club of Exmouth at their recent The Walk or Ride fundraiser. In spite of it being the hottest day of the year, an intrepid band of 66 walkers and four cyclists turned out to cover one of three walks of five, eight or 12 miles.Cyclists rode a 14-mile route which started and finished at Bicton Arena - while the walks had the added bonus of returning through Bicton Gardens - courtesy of the Lister family.Keith Turner, chairman of the Rotary walk committee, said: "It was decided by our members that 100 per cent of the sponsorship money raised should go to the cause nominated by the walker or cyclist and that the sponsorship should be augmented from money raised for the club's charity fund. "The cycle route was a new venture this year and whilst we were a little disappointed by the turnout - understandable in the heat - the four cyclists managed to raise £808. "We look forward to more participants next year. "The club congratulates all the walkers and cyclists on their success."The £100 prize draw for a nominated charity was won by Rosalyn and Terry Driver, who had chosen FORCE, while Keith also thanked "Knobblies" and Palmers, Whitton & Laing as sponsors and the support of Bicton Arena, Bicton College, Bicton Gardens and KRT Bar and Catering services. The charities who benefited are: Cancer Research UK £200, Clic Sargent £250, Bible Society £100, Children's Hospice SW £200, Devon Wildlife Trust £50, Wooden Spoon £500, FORCE - including the £100 draw - £400, Direct £50, Devon Sheltered Homes Trust £300, ELF £100, AquaBox £50 and Budleigh Salterton Carnival Club £460.
