A clean-up of the Imperial Recreation Ground will wait until 2009 as scientists study data and plot a course to prepare the former landfill area for potential development.

East Devon District Council began work on the area in 2007 with a project survey assessing the risk of landfill. A plan to dig out and dump any areas potentially causing long-term contamination were rejected after quotes placed work above the £1.15 million budget threshold.

Consultants were asked for a final survey in March this year, but have yet to complete their work despite a six-week project estimate.

The Council hope to prepare the area, which reports state is 'unlikely' to pose any contamination risk to site users, in time for a possible visitor centre project build in 2009.

District Councillors are set to discuss the issue at Wednesday's executive board meeting.
