Mistake was made

A row! A war should have broken out over the removal of 80 poppy wreaths from the town's war memorial without consulting the Royal British Legion committee, who were told to 'wind their necks in' - how rude.

I write on behalf of the people whose names are on that memorial and their bereaved families.

I knew a lovely lady in World War Two. They had not been married long but had a baby daughter who lives in Exmouth now with a very extended family.

Anyway, the lady in question tried for many years to get permission to visit his war grave.

She even wrote to Colonel Gadaffi, but to no avail. And so the only way she could pay her respects was to lay a wreath on the memorial, not only on Remembrance Day but on many occasions throughout the year.

I had never heard this lady raise her voice or say any adverse things of anyone. She did not have any hatred against the German people, but of Jeff Trail I’m not sure how she would have felt.

Fence. The kids that skate around the Strand Gardens do no harm whatsoever – it’s the kind of freedom that the fallen died for.

I saw a little girl no older than four on her skateboard going around the memorial and flipping her board just like the teenagers do – she had the spirit of Exmouth.

It sounds as if Mr Trail tells the town council what to do. If Bernard Greenaway was ten years younger this would not have happened.

Bernard was never on the memorial committee for his own prestige or to become a councillor; he does everything for love of our town.

By the way, whose idea was it to employ a falconer with his hawk to chase our seagulls? I know they can be a pain but, after all, they are supposed to be the souls of our lost sailors.

I do not know Mr Trail personally, I have never met him. He may do some good things as Exmouth War and Flagpole Memorial chairman, but I am afraid he has made a mistake on this one.

I understand he is an ex-Royal Marine, so I guess he must have left his initiative behind in his locker when he left the corps.

I have no idea of his day job, but his boss should give him a good
roasting.

I am angry and disgusted.
