Otterton's village church is celebrating initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project to safeguard its future.

The St Michael’s Parish and Community Endeavour, or SPACE, project, has received a ‘first round pass’ in its bid for funding towards vital roof repairs, the rectification of damage caused by damp and the installation of heritage displays.

Applications are considered in two rounds – this initial approval includes development funding of £23,000 to help SPACE progress its plans to apply for a grant towards the £285,000 that the work is estimated to cost.

Once the repairs are made, the plan is to transform the inside of the church, creating a community hub.

The Reverend Anne Charlton said: “This grant will enable us to secure the future of this historic building and local landmark.”
