In the discussion of the merits of the Longboat Cafe redevelopment at Budleigh Salterton, I have seen little mention of the fact that, if approved, the plan calls for the removal of a public shelter and viewing platform by the beach.

In the discussion of the merits of the Longboat Cafe redevelopment at Budleigh Salterton, I have seen little mention of the fact that, if approved, the plan calls for the removal of a public shelter and viewing platform by the beach.

The building is in a good state of repair and provides both shelter from the elements and a well-placed platform with good views across the beach.

The destruction of this structure would be a significant loss to both local residents and visitors.

The building in question is one of only two shelter areas on the beach, and the closest one to the town centre.

Diverting this site from a public facility solely to benefit a private development does not appear to be in the public interest. There is no similar alternative site for a replacement shelter in a discreet location which safeguards existing views.

The planning application is not yet finalised, so there is still time to make East Devon District Council estates department aware of local feeling.
