An historic chapel in East Budleigh will be opening its doors to the world of writing for its first ever Literary Weekend.

The event at Salem Chapel will take place on the weekend of May 10 and May 11, and will feature something for all ages and interests.

It will begin on the Saturday with a children’s workshop between 2pm and 5pm, with prizes up for grabs for youngsters, to be presented by Margaret Hallett of Budleigh Salterton library.

Children will have to be accompanied by adults, and there will be refreshments available.

Saturday evening, at 7pm for 7.30pm, will then see a session with romantic novelists Kate Furnivall, Anne Goring, Margaret James and Linda Mitchelmore, who will all be talking about their writing, answering questions, and signing copies of their books, with wine and nibbles available.

Then, on the Sunday at 2.30pm, there will be a session with local authors and their friends.

Among those appearing, Graham Hurley and Mal Peet will be giving a talk and signing books, while Audrey Walker will be reading from the novel, Love in the Mist, by author and festival organiser Rosemary A Smith, who will also be signing copies of her books. Local poet John Payne will be reading selected poems from his book Waves of Life, and CL Raven, identical twins from Cardiff, will be reading from their novel, Bleeding Empire.

Guest authors Sophie Duffy and Cathie Hartigan will also be signing their books.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served, and there will be a draw to win a signed copy of an author’s book.

Admission to the children’s event is free, with the Saturday evening event £4 and the Sunday afternoon event £3, or a weekend rover ticket is £6, with children free.

Tickets are available from Budleigh Salterton Tourist Information Centre, East Budleigh Community Shop, or by calling Rosemary on 01395 443992.

Rosemary added that she would like to thank local artist Ken Walker for designing the posters, and Salem Chapel for hosting the event.
