While not disputing George Saints' plea to encourage business in Exmouth (letters, February 5), there was no need for him to suggest that it would be a backward step if Exmouth became like Budleigh Salterton. Budleigh has a reputation as a desirable town in which to live. It has a thriving and varied shopping centre which provides for all the essential requirements that one needs throughout the week. While it is true that there is a predominantly elderly population, there are also many young families and children. Budleigh is a desirable town in which to live, so I suggest that George Saints spends his efforts trying to improve Exmouth, rather than trying to denigrate other East Devon towns.Peter Julian,Budleigh Salterton.
