AN EIGHT-year-old girl and her father were rescued by Exmouth coastguards after they were swept out to sea at Budleigh Salterton.

Kerys Nash, of Exeter, had been boogie boarding in the River Otter on Tuesday, but encountered troubles in the water.

Her dad, Adam Nash, 29, rushed into the sea but, with a strong outgoing tide, they were swept further out.

The Exmouth inshore lifeboat was called at 12.26pm and the volunteer crew reached the youngster and her father within 10 minutes.

Adam, happy to be back safe on dry land, said: "The response time was quick and it's great to see that the system works so well. We thank everyone involved.
