Ken hands over Post Office to David

BRIXINGTON Post Office is expanding by a third in September, and opening in Budgens next door.

Brixington Village Shops Postmaster Ken Brighton, 65, is retiring after nearly 12 years, marking the end of an era.

Previously, he was Postmaster in Teignmouth and Dawlish, in a career spanning 38 years; the Post Office has been there since 1967.

Ken said he had delayed his decision until he could 'be sure' that somebody could take over the mantle.

Now he has confirmed that neighbours David and Lucy Calland, who took over Budgens 18 months ago, are to integrate a new, bigger Post Office into their supermarket.

The new Post Office will continue to offer full banking services, open a third window, open all day Wednesday and during lunch time.

Currently the Post Office closes half-day Wednesday, during lunchtimes, and has two windows.

Ken said: "For some time, we had been talking to Budgens.

"It's great news, I wanted to retire, but to be honest I was worried about our loyal customers.

"We did not want to lose it for the Parade, as it is important to so many people.

"During a time when many post offices were struggling to keep open because of the withdrawal of the card accounts and pension books, our customers stood by us.

"They kept their business with us and did not go to the banks - for that we are very grateful."

His wife Lorraine said: "Our customers have been amazing, they have stuck by us, and shared our joys and sorrows, during difficult times like after the armed robbery (in 2007)."

David Calland, of Budgens, said: "We are looking forward to taking over the Post Office and looking after the customers that have supported Ken and Lorraine for so long.

"It makes business sense - all businesses are struggling and it adds another element to the store.

"All we needed was permission from the landlord, which we now have."

He added that they didn't need planning permission and would be opening in early September.

"We will be opening a third position and we will be fitting it out with the all the latest high-spec equipment.

"We are looking forward to it.
