AN Exmouth chippy will receive its first celebrity visitor on Friday when TV presenter Keith Chegwin will hand over a perfect portion award.

Krispies, in Exeter Road, has been crowned best chippy in the South West for the second year running.

Scores of loyal customers put the Exmouth chip shop in the top spot to win the regional award.

Now owners Tim and Kelly Barnes are waiting to see how the chippy has done in the national competition.

Tim said: "The customers voted and we came top in the South West by a mile.

"There isn't any secret to our success. We just use the best quality potatoes and the best oil to fry the chips in."

Keith Chegwin's visit to Exmouth coincides with National Chip Week, which began on Monday.

Keith will on Friday morning present Krispies owners Tim and Kelly with their award.

And the TV presenter will also treat Krispies' customers to a live performance of his newly chipified version of Combine Harvester - a re-worked version of the old Wurzel's hit inspired Keith's love for Britian's favourite dish.

Before Keith leaves Exmouth, Tim said he will be given the chance to sample a portion of the South West's finest chips.

The Krispies owner revealed the popular chippie was donating 10p to the Children's Hospice South West from every portion of chips sold during National Chip Week.

He said Krispies planned to match the cash raised.

Tim said: "We did it last year for the Macmillan appeal and it was a great success.

"We had a lot of support for that and raised 270 - that's quite a few thousand chips.
