Can someone enlighten me as to why there seems to be a campaign to alter so many areas of Exmouth? The Strand area has always been central to the town and, in my opinion, a pleasant area with its lovely flower beds and seating, where one can while away the time enjoying the people going by, or having a lunch break!Perhaps replacing the railings would enhance it, as was suggested a few years ago?I see the need for allowing cafes to have tables outside their premises and, where this has been allowed, it seems to work. But, surely, anymore would involve major road works at unnecessary cost.I think more money should be channelled into updating some of our old shop fronts and business premises which, at the moment, give such a dismal impression of the town. The seafront is much improved by the coloured beach huts and other buildings being maintained to a good standard. So, why not do more in the town to encourage tourists through it to the beach?I came to Exmouth in 1954 and loved the lovely white sandy beaches, lack of amusement arcades and hot-dog stands. It had a great community - with unique shops. Not a supermarket in sight. There were three cinemas and a dance hall, so everyone was catered for!Exmouth Docks was still in full swing, with ships coming in on a regular basis and a good fishing fleet.Perhaps the words 'rose-coloured spectacles' come to mind - but it's sometimes a good thing to hark back to the past and realise what's been lost.Josie Woolger,of Exmouth.
