A founding member of both the Exmouth Festival and the town council, Councillor Jean Mitchell, has died.
She was elected for Withycombe in 1996 and was chairman of the Festival Working Party.
Jean served as deputy mayor to Eileen Wragg in 2005.
Cllr Wragg said of her friend: “She was an invaluable support to me during the setting up of the Exmouth Festival in 1997 and, as my deputy, could always be relied upon to do what was in the best interests of Exmouth.
“Sadly, she did not become mayor, which I know was a great disappointment to her at the time.”
She added: “She was always scrupulously fair and concerned with equality and justice. She lived her life as a caring person with deeply held Christian beliefs, and always practised what she preached. Jean will be much missed.”
Full tributes and an obituary will be published in next week’s Journal.
