Budleigh Salterton’s carnival could be revived after an absence of more than 20 years.
News that a committee has been put together to investigate the possibility of a procession returning was revealed to the town council meeting.
The committee would run separately to Budleigh Salterton Carnival Club, which continues take part in the East Devon circuit.
If the idea takes off, Budleigh could become part of the circuit - meaning carnival clubs from across the region would take part every year.
Budleigh Salterton Carnival Club secretary Julie Meredith, who is part of the town’s carnival committee, would love to see it happen.
She said: “It would be just wonderful to have the carnival back in Budleigh - especially as everywhere else in East Devon has one.
“If we do a really good job with our first one, we should get accepted onto the East Devon circuit, which would mean floats from across the region would be coming to the town.”
Mayor Chris Kitson believes the event would bring people into Budleigh.
He said: “It would be good. It would give an opportunity for people to visit the town and see that we are a vibrant community.
“They [the committee] are a group of enthusiastic folk in the town who are keen to get a carnival back in Budleigh.
“We don’t want it just to be an hour-long event and that’s it. We want it to benefit the town and keep people here for the whole day.”
