THE police are warning drivers to take extra care on the region's roads after icy conditions on minor roads led to an increase in accidents.

On Sunday Devon and Cornwall Constabulary received in excess of 40 reports of vehicle collisions because of the icy conditions.

A force spokesperson said: "Whilst most major roads are not affected many minor and side roads have remained icy throughout the day.

"With temperatures likely to be below freezing overnight police are advising motorists to take extreme care on untreated roads, allow extra times and consider if their journey is absolutely necessary.
