A painstaking search is on for the descendants of a man who won a Topsham swimming championship more than 100 years ago.

W H Carrington won the 200-yard swimming championship at Topsham Swimming Pool.

Now, the swimming pool committee wants to find out more about the family and competition that took place.

Andrea Veale, committee member, said: “A lady called Anna contacted us as she had found the medal while going through her mum’s things and she thought it would be a good idea to trace the family of W H Carrington.

“She thought Topsham Swimming Pool would be a good place to start.

“We are trying to find out more information about the family so it can be returned to them.

“We would also like to find out more information about where the swimming races took place, as there wasn’t a swimming pool back then, so I imagine it must have been in the River Exe.”
