HOMEOWNERS are appealing for information in a bid to try to restore their property to reminiscent of how it appeared in World War II.

Marcus and Sheena Oxer, who live in Retreat Road, Topsham, would like people to contact them if they have any photographs of the street from that period.

The couple's home, which has been in their family since 1965, has retained most of its wartime features - except a front garden railing which was removed more than 60 years ago.

They want to put something back in its place, as close to how it appeared as possible. Sheena said: "All the railings were taken down during the war for metal use, presumably.

"Because none of the other houses in the street has them, we have no idea what they may look like."

Sheena, 36, said if anyone had any early photographs of the road, especially if they show the iron railings, she would love to see them.

"Marcus' grandparents moved down to the area in the 1960s. When his grandmother died, he bought the property from his mother and her three brothers.

"It was in need of modernisation. We have had all the original bakelite door handles and switches put in and a fireplace."

Sheena said she found 1930-style features to be used in homes quite charming, particularly when they were mixed with contemporary elements.

But, she joked: "I didn't have an affection for these kind of things before, but I definitely do now, having been with my husband for a number of years."

The homes were built by Topsham builders, May and Simeons.

If anyone has any photographs from the wartime period which may be of help to Marcus and Sheena, contact them on (01392) 682590.
