A public meeting is being held to launch a friends group for Budleigh Salterton Library.

It will be at St Peter’s Primary School on April 15, between 6.30pm and 8pm. There will be a presentation from Devon Libraries Service, and from a member of the Budleigh Library Steering Group, which was set up when the library was first threatened with closure last year.

The friends’ group will have a proposed membership fee of £1, but County Councillor Christine Channon said it was hoped people who could afford to make a more generous donation would do so.

The future of Budleigh Salterton Library was first called into question in April last year, when Devon County Council said it was one of 28 in the county which could close unless community volunteers helped run it. After a consultation, the council then announced a different plan, which would see its libraries move to an independent ‘mutual’ organisation, with the aim of keeping open all Devon’s libraries.

This plan was approved by the council last month.

A public meeting on council’s proposals in Budleigh last year saw support for the establishment of a friends’ group which would work with the council, and could see the library getting improved facilities.
