SPOT THE SCAMMERS: The South West has been identified as a UK phone scamming hotspot.

A study carried out by Microsoft shows that almost 39 per cent of people surveyed in the area have been targeted by a computer security phone scam.

The figure for the region is four per cent higher than the national average, which stands at 35 per cent.

Almost 36 per cent of those asked across the country have been targeted, or know someone who has been targeted, by some form of phone scam in the last month alone.

In response to these findings, Microsoft has launched its Spot the Scammers campaign to raise awareness of phone scams, offering simple steps people can take to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.

Stuart Aston, chief security adviser at Microsoft, said scams were confidence tricks carried out by sophisticated criminals and designed to gain trust by using established names and professional jargon.
