A Budleigh GP is calling on residents to join a walking for health scheme.

“Walk This Way” is the idea of Dr Gemma Newman, a GP registrar at the Budleigh Medical Centre. Andrew Dare of Leisure East Devon will act as coordinator.

It is based on the national Walking for Health scheme that started 12 years ago.

This sees over 600 local schemes contributing to improving the health of over 75,000 regular walkers nationwide.

Dr Newman said: “As a GP I am passionate about enabling people to exercise, whatever their current fitness level.

“I know lots of people worry that they won’t be good enough and that puts them off joining walking groups. The Budleigh Salterton group is for everyone, of all ages and abilities.

“Currently we offer a beginner walk of 30-40mins and an extension of this for those up to it. The walks are kept relatively short to enable you to fit them into your daily routine. As the groups grow and fitness levels improve, longer walks will be available.”

Everyone is encouraged to walk at their own comfortably brisk pace, and the scheme is not aimed at those who already walk regularly.

The walkers meet every Thursday, as health experts recommend that adults should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.

Local volunteer leader, Mark McGlade said: “Anyone interested in walking should just turn up at the Public Hall on any Thursday at 10.15am. Please tell your friends and neighbours. The more the merrier!”
