THE largest and final plot at Exmouth's Liverton Park has been given the all clear for retail development - after district planners approved a new Carpetright store.
The store will be positioned between the recently permitted Pets At Home and the new Halfords at the estate on the Salterton Road, writes David Beasley.
However, despite bringing 10 jobs to the area, councillors debated whether such a prime site should be given to Carpetright, in the hope of holding out for something that would bring more employment.
Exmouth councillor Geoff Chamberlain said: "My concern is that we have got to find 11,000 jobs in the area in so many years. It is important to retain the park for industrial purposes, but we have to make the best out of a bad situation.
"It is all very well to keep this site for industrial purposes, but the fact is that Exmouth is not well located for industrial development.
"My priority is job provision."
Councillor Chamberlain also aired concerns that the store would exacerbate traffic congestion on the Salterton Road - he suggested new traffic lights should be installed.
He recognised that extra lights would potentially make it difficult for both the Fire Service and the Ambulance Trust, which operate from their headquarters on the estate.
He said: "Access on to Salterton Road is getting more and more difficult with every retail unit built.
"And, while there would be difficulties for the emergency services, we could set up the necessary apparatus."
Exmouth councillor Mark Williamson said he had concerns that not enough effort had been made to market the site and find other companies that would bring more jobs.
He said: "I have been struggling with this. It is the largest and last site left at the development... but we don't think we have an option.
