Celebrity TV baker Glenn Cosby is urging the communities of East Devon to don their aprons and get involved in the Big Devon Bake Off for Hospiscare.

Glenn brought big bakes to millions of TV viewers across the UK when he featured in the 2013 series four of the BBC’s Great British Bake Off.

Now, he wants to encourage as many people as possible to organise their own Bake Off competition or to host a Big Bake Off tea party or coffee morning this September.

“I’m a huge admirer of the hospice movement. I am constantly staggered that it needs private support when it such an important service,” said Glenn. “As a teacher I saw the difference it made, not just to people suffering from life threatening illnesses but also their families. I urge everyone to get involved in supporting the Big Devon Bake Off.”

Glenn and Joe Mann, of Exeter-based Fun Kitchen, will be hosting a bake-off next month at Powderham Castle where they will be encouraging families to sign up to the bake-off.

Already 20 organisations and individuals have signed up for the Big Devon Bake Off.

Hospiscare provides free and specialised nursing to the terminally ill in Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

It looks after 700 patients at any one time, supporting patients in their own homes, in its hospice and day hospices. It relies on the generosity of the community to provide this vital service which costs £4.5m a year.

The Big Devon Bake Off takes place from September 13 to 21 and is one of the charity’s major fundraising events this year.

Hospiscare community fundraiser Susie Healey added: “We have 28 community nurses covering a wide area of Devon and it would be great if local communities supported us

“We’re asking everybody to get their friends, family, and colleagues together, join the baking craze and raise some dough for Hospiscare.

“Bake your trusty old favourite or try out something new. If you’re feeling competitive hold a bake-off competition and nominate somebody to be your Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood, or just get together have fun and eat some baked goodies. Hold the bake-off at home, work or school, in your local village or community hall or wherever you fancy.”
