GENEROUS well-wishers outraged by news that an Exmouth man, with an amputated leg, had his mobility vehicle stolen, have offered to donate a new scooter.

Brian Williams, 69, of Rodney Close, had his scooter taken two weeks ago on Saturday, May 30. It was found dumped in a ditch.

Brian, who suffered from a blood circulation problem in his left leg, was recovering in Exmouth Hospital at the time of the incident after an operation to have the limb removed.

The heart-rending story has attracted media attention nationwide.

One man, who lives in Middlesex, has pledged to donate the 'Rolls-Royce equivalent of a scooter'.

And B Mobile, based in Churchhill Road, Brixington, which specialises in mobility vehicles, has also offered to help.

Brian said: "I am really chuffed by the news - there are some good people out there after all. I would like to thank the people who have made these kind offers.

"It is light at the end of the tunnel as far as I'm concerned."

A delighted Brian said he would like to invite the kind people to a 'farewell to the leg party' he planned on having when he leaves hospital.

Martin Freeland, manager of the Geoffrey Willoughby ward at Exmouth Hospital, where Brian is staying, said he was 'extremely pleased' to have heard about the offers the patient had received.

He added: "He is trying really hard to become mobile by working with the physio every morning. We hope that he should be able to go home in the next couple of weeks.

"All the staff have become fond of him. He has been a model patient - he is certainly a character who we have enjoyed having here."

Brian said he was yet to decide which offer to accept.

If anyone has any information about the incident they should contact Devon and Cornwall Constabulary on 08452 777444.
