THE East Devon and Exeter Coeliac UK Voluntary Support Group are holding an awareness fun day next month.

The two-year old group has a membership of 685 and on May 8 will be holding their first big event which promises to be an enjoyable fun day for the whole family.

Around half a million people in the UK have coeliac disease, but don't know it.

Coeliac disease is a serious illness where the body's immune system reacts to gluten -found in wheat, barley and rye - making the body attack itself.

Affecting one in 100 there is no cure, and sufferers are on a strict gluten free diet for life.

The event starts at 10am and Cllr Nicholas, the Mayor of Exmouth, will officially open the event at 10.30am.

Bay FM will DJ/MC the entire day, and there will be Tea Pot Tales, face painting, jewellery making for children, Usborne children's books, paper craft, felt/textile artist/gifts, children's clothes, circus skills and a children's photographer .

First Stage Drama will be performing on stage at 12.15 pm and Centre Stage at 1 pm. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Band will be performing from 2.30pm.

There will be local/national gluten free producers, as well as gluten free paninis, ice cream, sausages and pasta,

Members of the group will be on hand to give advice on the illness, and provide written information, and hope the event will be well attended.
