THE tragic death of an Exmouth cyclist has impelled a bike store to auction off a road bike and organise a cycle ride in memory of "one of their own".
Steve Greenslade, of Sidwell Cycles, is organising an online auction in memory of David Rendell, of Cyprus Road, who died earlier this month after a collision with a car while out riding on the A379 Exminster to Dawlish Road.
Mr Greenslade, who knew the 23-year-old quite well, will be auctioning off a £700 BH (a Spanish firm) road bike model L31 Racel with all the money raised going to the Rendell family for them to put towards a memorial piece.
He said: "Dave came in to the shop about 12 months ago looking for a road bike and it is so tragic that he was involved in an accident on that bike.
"We went out on a few bike rides with him, he was like family, one of our own - it's hit the cycling community really hard."
The cycling community will also be doing a bike ride down the route David used to take from Exeter to Exmouth on Saturday, July 19, with Exeter Wheelers, Sid Valley Cycle Club and Exmouth club Cycle Sport Dynamo.
Further tributes where left to David on the Journal website tributes page.
Adrian Richmond, a friend, said: "David was an excellent rider...only a couple of weeks ago he took part in the Force Cancer Charity Cycle Century Challenge and in the 100 mile event.
"He was a caring and sound person who enjoyed cycling and died doing something he loved doing."
Dee and Tony, who knew David for many years, said: "We have known David for many years and seen him grow up from a little boy to a young man, helping his Grandfather in his garden.
"He was growing up to be such a wonderful, good young man, and will be sadly missed by all those who loved him."
Police confirmed the car involved was a grey MG and no action was being taken against the driver.
Details of the auction have not been finalised but anyone interested in the auction can contact Sidwell Cycles on (01392)272929.
