CRIES for help coming from the direction of the back of Camperdown Terrace tonight sparked a search of the River Exe by Exmouth coastguards and the RNLI.
The inshore lifeboat at 10.36pm carried out a search of the Gut area of the river while the coastguard team searched the shoreline.
Two people seen leaving the area on the search teams' arrival had been earlier spotted swimming in the same river location
The search was called off at 11pm after it was decided the two swimmers had been mistakenly thought to be in distress.
