THE TOPSHAM Society has paid tribute to a man who was loved throughout the town and was a special member of the society's committee.Roy Wheeler, who died on June 9, at the grand age of 94, was heavily involved in his town and even helped set up the annual Topsham School Trophy.Mr Wheeler will probably be remembered best for the guided Town Walks that he led for more than 20 years - when, with a spring in his step, he would regale walkers with wonderful tales of his youth. The chairman, Geoff Wilkinson, said: "Topsham has lost a lively and much loved member of the community."Roy's great love of and commitment to Topsham led him to be involved with The Topsham Society from its earliest days."Committee member Sh‰n Toyne recalled Roy's character: "Some years ago, when Roy was still an active society committee member, he offered a conducted walk of Topsham to any interested members. An hour or so later, exhausted with laughter at his tales and history of Topsham people and places, I returned home rejuvenated by the jovial company of a true Topsham gentleman."A thanksgiving service was held at St Margaret's Parish Church, Topsham.
