Withycombe Spar customer was shown the trre meaning of customer spirit when staff celebrated her 100th birthday with free shopping
Customer service went beyond the call of duty when a shop in Withycombe held a birthday celebration for its oldest customer.
The staff at Spar, in Withycombe Village Road, presented 100-year-old Doris Crispin with flowers, a cake and her weekly shop for free after the centenarian celebrated her milestone birthday.
Christine Calland, who runs the shop with her husband, Roy, said the staff wanted to thank Mrs Crispin for being a loyal customer – shopping at Spar every week for the last nine years.
Mrs Calland said: “She was shocked. She didn’t expect anything. She is so unassuming. We just wanted to say ‘thank you’ to her. The staff all think the world of Mrs Crispin.
“We have been here for more than nine years and she has been a regular customer. She is delightful and never complains. She is so cheerful and has an absolutely brilliant sense of humour. We often have a chuckle and a leg-pull.”
Mrs Crispin, who also received a telegram from the Queen to congratulate her on her 100th birthday, is picked up every week and driven to the family-run store by Mr Calland.
There, staff members Pat Stephens and George Burllfinger personally help the pensioner navigate the shelves, finding what she needs before she is taken home.
