A FIFTH Royal Marine from Norton Manor's 40 Commando has been killed in Afghanistan, the MoD has announced.
The unnamed marine, who trained at the Lympstone training camp and who served alongside Exmouth Royal Marine Stephen 'Whisky' Walker - who was killed last month on foot patrol in Helmand Province - died on Tuesday morning in an explosion while serving as part of Combined Force Sangin.
He becomes the fifth 40 Commando Royal Marine, based at Norton Manor Camp, to die in Afghanistan in less than a month.
The Marine's next of kin have been informed and have asked for privacy before further details are released.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said: "It is with sadness I must inform you that a Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Sangin this morning by an explosion.
"He was on a foot patrol with his fellow Marines and Afghan National Army soldiers when he was struck by an explosion.
"He died in the course of his duty seeking to improve the lives of the people of Sangin.
"His courage in the face of danger will not be forgotten.
"He will be greatly missed and we will always remember him."
