A BID to convert a former Colony chippy into a family home has been backed by town planners following a lively debate.

The owner of 8 Hartopp Road applied to convert the former shop and build an extension on the first floor.

The plans were initially refused by district planners, who then worked with the owner to increase the chances the application would be given the green light at the second time of asking.

Councillor Steve Gazzard said; "I feel it's over development and there is no parking. I know it has been closed for some time but it is the loss of another shop."

Cllr Stewart said: "I am mindful that East Devon has put a lot of work into this.

"I fear however it is foregone conclusion."

Cllr Richard Turner said: "I fail to see what else could be put there.

"You can put a shop there, but if it is not a viable concern it is not an option."

Sandy Sutton said: "As much as we do not want shops to close if people can't make them work and somebody is working to make it into a much needed home we should let them."

The plans will now be considered by district planners.
