BRIXINGTON will on Saturday fly the flag for its local shops - with a day dedicated to celebrating community shopping.Exmouth mayor Joy Whipps and a host of local dignitaries will be out in force from 10.30am to officially launch Brixington Parade shops and highlight the area's new regeneration project.The plans have been 18-months in the making and it is hoped the fun-filled day, promising family activities, will forge lasting links between the community and the shops.Councillor Darryl Nicholas, deputy mayor and Exmouth Champion, said: "There has been a need in Brixington to raise awareness of how important local shops are. "By encouraging the involvement of families and schools, we can visibly help identify the connections that really make up what a local community is all about."Town manager Tony Collins said: "This has been a great project to work with - so many different people and groups coming together to make a difference for their own community."The re-vamped Brixington Parade shops will be flanked by flags designed by Brixington Primary School pupils.The youngsters were invited to enter a competition to paint a picture highlighting community life.The work has been reproduced onto flags and wall panels surrounding the shopping complex. The aim is to highlight the importance between a community and its shops. New signage spells out in silver that the complex has been renamed Brixington Village Shops. The county council plans to improve directional signage to the shops.
