Those of your readers who know me, and have fought alongside me in various campaigns, are aware that I do not start something that I am not absolutely convinced about and that I cannot finish.

This time, although I am absolutely certain that something must be done to protect this town from flooding, I am unable to carry on the campaign that has just begun.

My survival suit now has too many faults in it for another battle, a fact which I deeply regret, so I'm asking every one of you who lives and works in what we might call the lower town to do what you can to protect it from flooding.

Write letters to, email and telephone SWW and the Environment Agency (and make a note of what's said). Contact the town clerk and your local councillors. Put pressure on them, the people who are supposed to ensure that our Flood Prevention Scheme is in good working order and that the river wall is well maintained.

Take a look at the brook and the estuary wall yourselves and see whether you think they look fit for purpose. Please.

If you do nothing, and we have a repeat of the 1960 floods, who will you blame?

Ann Prior,

75 Egremont Road, Exmouth.
