An Exmouth historian has discovered a first edition of the News of the World, the Sunday tabloid which closed this week after 163 years because of phone hacking allegations.

Arthur Cook, of Henrietta Place, is the author of Exmouth at War said the first edition was lining a box.

He said: “I bought this box some years ago at a car boot sale and it’s lined with what I think is the first edition of the News of the world. Why we’ll never know! I think it’s just a thing people used to do years ago.”
