REPORTS bogus firefighters have been operating in Exmouth has prompted the fire service to issue a warning to residents.

The warning comes after this week an Exmouth nursing home was targeted by someone claiming to be a firefighter, who offered to carry out an inspection.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said its personnel never made 'cold calls' to premises and its callers always carried identification which could be verified by contacting the fire service.

A fire brigade spokesman said: "We always make an appointment when we carry out an inspection and we show our ID cards when we turn up at the premises.

"These have a telephone number on the back, so people can make a check with the fire service before allowing us in.
