A horse had to be euthanised after becoming stuck in a 'slurry-filled' ditch in Clyst St Mary this morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue responded at around 7.40am to reports of two horses stuck in Winslade Barton.

A fire service spokesman said: “Fire crews confirmed two horses stuck in a shallow draining ditch and requested the attendance of a veterinary surgeon and the telehandler from Clyst St George in Exeter.

Fire crews assisted the veterinary surgeon who had to euthanize one of the horses.

“Fire crews rescued the other horse using the telehandler and animal rescue equipment. The care of the rescued horse was left with the owner.”
