The contributions of Exmouth’s women to the suffrage movement are detailed in a new booklet.
The fight for women’s suffrage in Exmouth has been detailed in a new booklet.
Exmouth Historical and Archaeological Society has published an illustrated booklet entitled The Women’s Suffrage Movement in Exmouth.
According to the society, there was a great deal of suffragist activity in the town, but no real suffragette element, although Exmouth women were involved with the more militant suffragettes elsewhere.
Author April Marjoram was a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University before retiring to Exmouth in 2004.

Society chairman Dave Gwilliam said: “ We count ourselves extremely lucky to have persuaded so distinguished a local historian as April to write the first book in what is planned to be a series on various aspects of the history of Exmouth.”
The booklet was a best-seller at the society’s recent Exmouth History Day, but copies are still available from Moore’s Newsagents in the Strand, or direct from series editor Mike Tracey on 01395 260442.
