Regarding your article "Water price set to rise still higher" (April 16).Having recently (September 2008) moved to this area from the Portsmouth area, I was interested in the figures quoted in your article. You compare a "crippling" total (for water supply and sewerage removal) of 454 per year rising to 481 by 2014, with Portsmouth residents, who would pay just 98 per year by 2014. What you fail to observe is that Portsmouth Water Company is a water supply company only - sewerage removal is the responsibility of Southern Water and is billed separately. To give a true perspective, I lived in a Band F property and the charges for the year 2008-2009 were 116.52 for the supply of unmetered water from Portsmouth Water Company and 345.71 for unmetered sewerage removal by Southern Water - a total of 462.23. This is marginally more than the 454 total you give for East Devon for the current year. The duty of a newspaper is to report facts, accurately, and not to distort them by printing a poorly researched article.Mr N E Ling,6a Penlee, Budleigh Salterton.
