Properties in Exmouth have been evacuated and a road partially closed following a fire within an electrical unit of a factory.

Three fire engines were sent from Exmouth, Middlemoor and Sidmouth after receiving reports of a fire in a factory, in Dinan Way, at around 3.45pm today (Sunday).

On arrival crews found smoke billowing from the factory and there was a fire within an electrical unit.

Crews required breathing apparatus in order to extinguish the fire and afterwards requested a hazardous materials officer assessment.

Devon and Cornwall Police supported the fire service with evacuation of nearby properties and road closures.

Police reported at around 4.40pm Salterton Road westbound had been closed westbound, but that traffic was ‘coping well’.

Police say the fire was located between Lidl and Bradham Lane.

Updates will be provided as and when we get them.
