Cancer support has been given a boost in Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton thanks to the launch of a new support group.

Five local people have set up a new fundraising group for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Now the founder members hope others will join the group to help raise much-needed funds to help Macmillan give local people living with cancer the medical, practical, emotional and financial support they need.

Chairman John Fisher said: ‘After the death of my mother in August, and being forced into a career change at the same time, I wanted something to occupy my mind, and put something back into a community that has given me so much after 36years in business.

“Helping to establish a new group will enable me to apply my skills in a new context and give me a welcome change of focus from what has been a particularly difficult period for me.”

Calvin Lovelock, Macmillan’s fundraising manager, said: “Although Macmillan has more committees in Devon than any other county, I am absolutely delighted about the birth of our new group – especially as Exmouth is the county’s largest town and the charity has embarked on a 2 million programme of investment in new cancer services and projects in Devon.

“The energy and enthusiasm of a new group is always highly infectious and motivational - and with our centenary just ahead, what a time to be involved with Macmillan!”

Three of the five founding members are from Villa Maison, in Cyprus Road.

Last Saturday the group held its first fundraising event – a coffee morning for friends and neighbours.

Residents teamed up to fundraise after hearing the charity was keen to set up a group in Exmouth.
