Boat owners are among those who are set to benefit from more car parking spaces near Exmouth Marina.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has announced that the car park at Camperdown Terrace is to be extended, with Devon County Council vacating its compound which previously occupied part of the site.

The car park, which previously had capacity for 39 vehicles, will now offer 112 spaces, including almost 30 suitable for cars with trailers.

EDDC also says that, over the summer months, an area of the car park will be zoned off for free unhitched trailer parking.

The council says this will be a flexible arrangement, which can be expanded to cope with additional demand as necessary.

It says the move will support people using the improved launching facilities at nearby Mamhead Slipway.

A planning application has been submitted for the change of use, which is currently under consideration.

A district council spokesperson said: “If the planning application is approved, construction will begin in May 2017, so that the new improved facility is available for use over the summer.

“In the meantime, the council’s car parking service is opening a section of the former county council compound for free trailer parking over the Easter holidays, ending on April 18.

“In addition, the council will be allowing its customers to use the compound as an overflow car parking amenity with the same tariff and conditions as the main car park over the Easter holidays.”
