A pair of Exmouth youngsters were among five from the East Devon to have a special Royal appointment at Buckingham Palace.

Jacon Betts, 19, and Alfred Downs, 18, who are both part of the Honiton Independent Group, were at the palace as part of a special presentation of their Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The pair got to meet Prince William and were presented with their certificates by Paralympic athlete David Weir.

In gaining their awards, Alfred volunteered at a home for vulnerable people while Jacob helped at Open Door.

To achieve the gold standard, the boys undertook residential courses; Jacob at Outward Bound Mountain School in Scotland and Alfred attended a summer school studying biochemistry.

They also took part in an expedition spending five days on Brecon Beacons.

At the presentation, usually held at St James Palace, they were accompanied by three leaders from the Honiton group and one parent each.
